Latvian mittens - MIDNIGHT FLAKES (blue)

In the Baltic country of Latvia, there is a long tradition of knitting mittens

For centuries, mittens have been the Latvian gift of choice. Hand-knitted mittens were exchanged at weddings, funerals, and religious feasts - they were, in fact, exchanged so much that it was not unusual for an adult woman to own more than 300 pairs!
When a woman was to be married, she was expected to knit mittens for all members of her wedding party - and shame on the bride who did not make every pair completely unique!
This of course means that there now is a very extensive catalogue of patterns, and every pattern has its own meaning originating in Latvian myths and legends - the Midnight Flakes pattern is inspired by the sight of snow falling against the night sky

Latvian company HobbyWool assemble lovely mitten kits with traditional, Latvian patterns so you, too, can knit the cosy mittens - who knows, you might end up knitting 300!

The kit contains wool yarn for a pair of mittens in sizes M/L, a colour chart, and a pattern in both English and Danish.
